How to Use the CARAT

The CARAT consists of three sections:

GIS Basics: outlines the foundational principals to building a successful GIS to support public safety.

Case Studies: is where you will learn how other agencies use GIS. It is a rich resource for templates, best practices, links to free code and Standard Operating Procedures.

Needs Assessment: is an interactive program for identifying your highest priority applications and data you will need to meet your goals. The tool will generate a report which will provide guidelines and resources customized to meet your needs.

What Is The CARAT?

The Capability and Readiness Assessment Tool is intended for public safety practitioners interested in learning about and/or building a GIS to support their agencies' work.

It is designed to serve as a roadmap for anyone interested in learning about, doing, or directing a GIS program to support public safety.

The CARAT Prototype currently is in beta version. The information contained in this tool has not undergone expert review, nor are all of the capabilities and functionalities available. NAPSG Foundation is in the process of seeking additional resources to refine the content and build-out the full scale capabilities of this tool. Please send questions to carat@publicsafetygis.org. Thank you - and enjoy the CARAT Prototype.
